The importance of buying locally is becoming increasingly obvious to those who had yet to open their eyes. Global growth has brought good opportunity and items shared among cultures. But it's also brought on much waste and sustainability issues.
If you've read through my posts previously on this site, then chances are you've already made some chocolate gourmet strawberries.
But buying locally supports your close economy. It keeps the money helping out your neighbors, the local farmers, the smaller shops that support those growers. You can see what has happened with the mega-grocery stores and superstores that shall remain unnamed. The prices are a bit lower for some items. People flock to them. Dependable stores go out of business in the area because naturally they can't keep up that volume to cut prices to match.
What happens when there are no more small stores? There's no incentive for the big stores to keep all prices low at that point. And no loyalty to stay in town. There are examples of the stores packing up after knocking out all the other business options. The places become ghost towns. It's not a good deal for anybody.
